Glitter Jar Experiment

11/30/2017

We made glitter jars today using water, corn syrup, shells, beads, "bling", and glitter. One of the objectives was to see the reaction between different sorts of liquids and solids. We even got to see air trapped in the corn syrup. Another objective was to gather information by drawing results and labeling a diagram after we waiting for an hour for the contents of jar to settle. We predicted what would happen first. Our prediction was faulty because I did not correct them when using the word heavy when really we should have been discussing density. Another mistake was that we all predicted the water and corn syrup would separate over time. It did not so we talked about how it became a solution. We are waiting to see if it will separate given more time.

Snowmen at Night Writing

We read Snowmen at Night, Snowmen at Work, Snowmen All Year, and Snowmen at Christmas by Caralyn Buehner. The students then picked which snowman theme they wanted to write their point of view from. Most of them picked a snowman at night and snowman at work. Some even added the snowman all year. After everyone finished their writing, we made snowman from paper that we had ripped up. (Ask your child why we had crumpled the paper up. It had nothing to do with snowmen. We talked about how after we crumple paper up we never can make it flat again. Then we talked about how even when we apologize, we can never really take back words or actions. How it is always important to think before we do or say something. Then because I am frugal, we have o do something with the paper we ruined. Even so I think it is an important message that needs to be said more than once.)

The second graders also got to read their writing at the K-4 assembly on Wednesday. The first graders will have a chance to read writing at the assembly later on in the year.

Mystery Liquid Experiment

Students were given 6 mystery liquids to observe and make an educated guess about the identity of each. They needed to use their 4 senses(no tasting!) we are working on using descriptive adjectives in our observations. Many of them guessed honey for the corn syrup.

We have been reading the many different versions of Stone Soup all week. One of the many themes was how by sharing we make ourselves richer. Thank you to everyone that was able to share ingredients for our Stone Soup (on such short notice). The first grade did a fantastic job preparing it. They all wrote their own recipes to share. Then during our fun Friday activity we shared it with the second graders.

Investigating deer remains!

They identified many of the bones!

We found a stray bone on the path. They hypothesized that a coyote had carried it away from where the deer had died.

The final descent is always the most fun.
