As the note from Mr. Farnsworth said, we are starting a program called "Changing Perspectives".
From their web-site : http://cpne.org/
"Welcome to Changing PerspectivesChanging Perspectives is a not for profit organization which provides disability awareness programs in schools. We develop curriculum and provide on going educator trainings.
Changing Perspectives engages students in open dialogue and real world experiences in an effort to promote disability awareness and foster inclusive communities."
We spent a lot of time last week talking about empathy, reading books about empathy, and watching videos. Each student wrote what he/she thought empathy was or meant. Some applied it to his/her own lives.
This week, I read about dyslexia and learning disabilities. We discussed how everyone has something that is easy for them and things that may be more difficult for them. They wrote about what was easy for themselves and then they wrote about something that was difficult for them.
We also had each second grader partner with a first grader to help his/her read a book. It was fantastic. The second graders were patient, empathetic, and extremely helpful.
