Measuring air temperature and water temperature. Each student put their hand in a glove then put it in a baggy of "blubber"(Crisco). They compared how it felt different from just having a glove on in the ice water. Did the blubber help keep them warm?
The first graders started the 120 book before Christmas. We are just finishing it up now. They had to trace their hands and number their fingers from 1-120. Then they had to label hand as 5, 10... counting by 5's. their last task was to count by tens. Each page had ten fingers so they labeled the bottom of the page 10, 20, 30... they will bring them home next week and it would be great to use to practice counting 40 and backwards on. Mix it up and have them count starting from different numbers.
We began skating at recess on Tuesday. I will bring groups of 4-5 on the days I do not have duty. (Tuesdays and Thursdays) On Fridays we will all go in the afternoon while some of our friends are at SkiRunners. Long, warm socks are a good idea! We had so much fun.

Mr. Payson and the 4th grade taught us a little about plate tectonics and how all the continents were one at one time. They showed us flip books they made of the moving apart of Pangaea.
I am sure many of you have seen the video of people blowing bubbles and watching them freeze. We tried this at recess today. It was a challenge because of the snow and wind but we did get to watch the bubble freeze in the wand which was pretty cool. We will try again next week.
